Prepare for Your Career Journey

Document review
In this appointment we’ll review any career related documents you would like, such as resumes, CVs, cover letters or other application related documents.

Building Strategic Relationships
Networking isn’t about talking to strangers in a room full of people. It’s about carefully considering the type of people you need in your network and then reaching out to them individually to build life-long connections. We can help you identify the right kinds of people for your network, teach you how to conduct informational interviews and how to appropriately follow up.

Job/Internship Search
Searching for an internship or career level position is stressful and sometimes the steps in the process are unclear. All of this can leave job seekers feeling anxious and overwhelmed. We are here to help reduce your job search stress and provide you with tools and strategies to determine the right internship/job for you, how to find opportunities and how manage your search.

Career Exploration and Planning
What is your career preparation profile?
I’m unclear about my career goals.
I have a few options I’m considering and need help determining which option to pursue.
I have clear career goals but need help figuring out how to reach those goals.
Whatever your starting point, we can help you create a career road map that will clarify the steps you need to take to be the change you want to see in the world.

Interview Preparation/Mock Interview
Looking good on paper is not enough. If you want to get the job offer you need to know how to interview well. We will help you prepare for a real interview for industry, non-profit, or government position. We tailor the practice session based on your resume and job description to make it as realistic as possible.
If you don’t have much interview experience, we can also coach you on how to prepare to interview before we do the mock interview with you. We’ll give you interview tips and strategies that will improve your interview performance.

Negotiation
A huge part of the job search process is preparing to negotiate your salary. We will work with you to analyze the offer, determine if the position aligns with your values and walk you through the best ways to negotiate based on your needs and desires. We will also help you practice your “ask” so you feel confident in asking for what you want.

Other (Strengths conversation, Handshake/LinkedIn review etc)
Sometimes it’s hard to define the type of assistance you need and that’s OK. If the other appointment blocks do not fit your needs, we would still love to meet with you and support your career development in whatever way you need.

How does the Career Development Office help me with career planning?
We partner with you to determine your career goals and design an action plan to meet those goals. We’ve developed Career Road Maps as guides to help you navigate the process from self-assessment to career assessment, search strategies (i.e. networking), creation of self-marketing tools (i.e. resume/CV, cover letters), and interview preparation. We provide an online interview preparation platform Big Interview (cgu.biginterview.com) you can use to develop and practice your interviewing skills before you meet with a career consultant for a mock interview (available online and in person)

Does the Career Development Office host workshops that will help me with future employment?
