Out of an abundance of caution, the annual in-person commencement celebration will be postponed until a time when health regulations determine it is once again safe to gather in public.

View a special message from CGU President Len Jessup about his high regard for our graduates, the importance of the annual commencement tradition, as well as his concern for your safety.

In the same way that the in-person ceremony hosts family and friends—as well as the entire CGU community—you will be invited to tune in to this virtual event, joining our graduates, where you will be greeted by President Jessup and other speakers.

In place of walking across the stage, graduates’ names will be read aloud while a photo and personal message from the graduate will be displayed on the screen.

Once life has returned to normal, Claremont Graduate University intends to host a celebratory event where doctoral and MFA graduates will be hooded, and we can laud every graduate in person.

Virtual Participation

The virtual ceremony is a great opportunity for you, your friends, and family to attend from the comfort of your homes. CGU has contracted with the company MarchingOrder to provide the platform for our virtual ceremony.

The virtual ceremony will be recorded and available for viewing at a later date after the ceremony is over.


The virtual ceremony will take place at 10:00 am on May 30, 2020. Graduates will receive an email containing information about registering, providing name pronunciation information, and a current photo for inclusion in the virtual celebration. The email will come from and be sent to current students at their CGU email address, and alumni at the “home” email address listed in their MyCGU portal.

A few days prior to May 30th, those graduates who registered for the ceremony will receive an email from CGU’s Student Records/ MarchingOrder providing information about how to log-in the day of the event, which you may then share with family and friends.


How do I register for the virtual ceremony?
You will receive an email from CGU Student Records/MarchingOrder You will be prompted to upload a photo appropriate to the occasion and brief personal note to be included on a slide during the ceremony.

What is a virtual ceremony?
A virtual ceremony has many of the same components as a live ceremony. Instead of walking across the stage to accept your diploma, your name will be read aloud while a slide with your photo, degree, and your personalized message will be displayed.

What if I don’t want to attend the virtual ceremony?
Do nothing. You will still receive your diploma in the mail and you will, of course, be invited to the in-person ceremony.

Are students who anticipate completing degree requirements in summer 2020 able to participate in the virtual ceremony?
Those students graduating in summer 2020 are not eligible to apply to participate in the virtual ceremony. Summer graduates will be invited to attend the in-person ceremony.

If I choose to participate in the virtual ceremony will I still be eligible to participate in the rescheduled in-person ceremony?
Yes. If you choose to participate in the virtual ceremony, you will still be invited to the rescheduled in-person ceremony.

When will I receive information on the rescheduled in-person ceremony?
We are working with our vendors and monitoring the unfolding public health situation to determine a new date. Once we have confirmed the date, we will send out an email to eligible graduates for that ceremony.

How may I obtain reimbursement for regalia rental fees?
Regalia rental orders through Huntley Bookstore have been canceled. To receive your refund, please call the bookstore at (909) 607-1502 Monday through Thursday between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Your order is listed under the credit card number you provided, so please have the that number ready when you call.

If you purchased custom-made regalia, your order is being processed and will be shipped by Herff Jones directly to your residence.

Will I receive a commencement program?
Yes, a commencement program will be mailed to your address on file.

When will I receive my diploma?
Please visit the Registrar’s Graduation FAQs page for diploma distribution information.

I already purchased travel and lodging. What should I do?
If you’ve already purchased travel and lodging, please reach out to the issuing companies to see if they will be willing to work with you on cancellations and refunds. Numerous airlines and hotels are waiving cancellation fees at this time.
