Navigating Post-Coursework
The doctoral process is organized according to a series of degree milestones in the form of coursework, qualifying exams, dissertation proposal, and dissertation defense. The CWR has partnered with different departments at CGU in order to make the post-coursework process more navigable. If you are feeling confused or a little lost, we hope this guide can provide valuable information and resources to help you succeed during the post-coursework period of your program.
While your department’s Sharepoint folder should have some valuable information about the qualifying exam process that’s specific to your program, the CWR has begun a Qualifying Exams Preparation Group for Spring 2024 that is set to continue during the Fall.
Along with joining a preparation group, we also encourage students at the qualifying exams stage to sign-up for some of our writing events which offer dedicated study time facilitated by a CWR writing consultant. Our Productivity Saturday occurs once a month and welcomes students working on any kind of assignment including qualifying exam preparation.
Productivity Saturday and Other Events
Students preparing for exams also tend to benefit from time management and developing a productivity system.

Further Resources for Qualifying Exam Prep:
The CWR offers several programs and courses for students working on either a Master’s thesis or a dissertation proposal. Along with Productivity Saturdays, students working on these assignments may also register for the weekend Dissertation Bootcamp. This is a one day writing event open to both MA and doctoral students who are working on a thesis, dissertation proposal, or the dissertation itself.
Weekend Dissertation Bootcamps
Students developing a dissertation project are also welcome to register for WRIT 350. WRIT 350 is a free course that offers guided instruction on relevant topics to proposal and dissertation writing along with structured writing time. WRIT 350 is offered every semester, including summer, and is open to both MA and PhD students.
Further Resources for Proposal Writing
Students who have successfully defended their proposal are encouraged to continue registration in WRIT 350. WRIT 350 can prove a valuable resource for setting time aside and getting words on the page.
The CWR also provides specialized consultations for students working on grants. Along with hosting webinars on the grant writing process, you can log into our portal and make an appointment with one of our grant specialists today.
