This fall, T-Studies at CGU tackles cybercrime with a new class, TNDY 408Z – Cybersecurity: Creating a Safe and Secure Global Village, from Dr. Chinazunwa Uwaoma. Dr. Uwaoma is a research assistant professor in the Center for Information Systems and Technology (CISAT), who holds an MSc in Digital Technology and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of the West Indies, Jamaica. Her research borders on the application of emerging mobile technologies and embedded systems to improve the quality of life, education, and social interaction among the underserved strata of the society.

This 4-unit course is designed to help students understand and analyze the whole gamut of information security threats ranging from identity theft and credit card fraud to physical safety both in the workplace and at home.

Spanning the global to the personal, the course examines the impact of security threats on society-at-large, while also enabling students to develop the knowledge and skills to protect their personal information and assets.

Beginning with the basics of network security, students will apply systems thinking to trace threats across different levels of society. They will critically assess assumptions, beliefs, and values related to cybersecurity – including perspectives of power and social-organizational inequities. Then, working collaboratively, they will engage with different perspectives to connect ideas and create solutions.

The course will include demo videos and scenario-based discussion questions to allow the students to gain practical skills in cybersecurity.

TNDY 408Z is offered in hybrid mode – mostly online with few in-person sessions.

Ultimately, the course aims to actively engage students in the campaign against cybercrime: Don’t leave it up to the latest Marvel superhero: you, too, can fight cybercrime.
