Umbrella

Umbrella is a web-based service that maintains a database of malicious websites known to host viruses, malware, phishing, ransomware, and bot-nets. When accessing Internet resources, requests are checked against the Umbrella database. If a system attempts to connect to a dangerous site, Umbrella will prevent access and display a warning that a site is not safe. Such activity includes using web browsers, clicking links embedded in email messages, or the use of other programs that may make network requests.

Security

The Umbrella service will help secure CGU systems and protect data from a plethora of security threats. Some of these threats include viruses, malware, phishing, ransomware, and bot-nets.

Notification

If a system attempts to access a malicious website, it will be protected by blocking access to the site and displaying a warning indicating what category of security threat was detected.

Questions

Please read the Frequently Asked Questions below. If you have other questions about information security, Umbrella, or blocked sites, please contact the CGU HelpDesk at 909-621-8174 or helpdesk@cgu.edu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who will be protected by this service?

A: All devices that connect to the wired or wireless network will be automatically protected. This includes mobile phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, streaming devices or any other device.

Q: Do I need to install something on my device?

A: No, this service works at the network level.

Q: Why is this protection important?

A: Higher education is particularly vulnerable to malicious activity because university computer networks have historically been as open and inviting as their campuses. Universities also house a lot of interesting information including HR data, student personal and financial records, and commercially viable research. One of the most effective ways of obtaining this information is by luring users into visiting sites that are malicious. Umbrella is a defense against this growing threat.

Q: If my device is already infected does Umbrella help me?

A: In some cases yes. If your device is under the control of a botnet, Umbrella can transparently interrupt communication with the upstream command and control servers.

Q: What do I do if I believe that a website is being blocked in error?

A: While false positives are rare, open a ticket with the CGU HelpDesk and we’ll be happy to investigate.

Q: Is Umbrella tracking my Internet activity?

A: Umbrella analyzes normal client DNS requests and reports data on malicious sites only.

Q: Is Umbrella blocking any other category of content?

A: No. Umbrella is used only to mitigate security threats and upholds CGU’s commitment to academic freedom.

Q: Can Umbrella protect me while I’m traveling, studying abroad, or working from home?

A: Yes, there is an optional client for Macintosh, Windows, and popular mobile devices using iOS or Android. Contact your IT help desk for more information.

Q: Do I still need end-point protection such as anti-virus protection on my device?

A: Yes. Umbrella is just the first layer of defense against malicious content, and works in concert with traditional types of threat protection.
